Name of location : Nananu-i-Ra Island
Country : Fiji
Date of visit (s) : June every year
Every June a group of 17 or 18 of us make a pilgrimage to a small island called Nananu-i-ra.
Conveniently located some 4kms of the Northern tip of Fiji's main island -Veti Levu the island
is the recipient of South Easterly trade winds. Consistently the wind blows 18-30 knots and some
days up to 45 knots, cross on shore. The sailing is mostly sea swell orientated with swell up
to a couple of meters once past the reefs and good for slalom blasting, bump and jump and perfect
heaven for freestyle bunnies. Brilliant for kite surfers also. Nice shallow sandy lagoons provide
good learning areas or practice areas. The beach is 3/4 mile long and its likely that you will
be the only person on it during the day.
To get to the island you need to take a 2.5 hour bus or taxi ride from Nadi airport to Ellington
Wharf where a 4km longboat ride to the island completes the journey.
There are a couple of small backpacker motel orientated places to stay, such as Bethams cottages
(rob@bethams.co.fj).
They have burs and bunkrooms from $50 per night. Good food, bar and shop.
Next door is another backpackers called McDonalds and up the hill the sleepy but more up market
Moku Singhas for the hotel orientated folk.
June is the best month, and is a good time to go, hang out with other windsurfers and get on the turps.
