Good Morning Maui.
My typical winter days on Maui
6:00 After a good night dreaming about mast high waves and side shore wind, it's time to wake up and get the big and tasty American breakfast. Orange juice, eggs, bacon, sausages, toasts and cheese make you back to life in five minutes...
6:30 The job start. E-mailing sponsors, sending pictures and articles to magazines and preparing some projects for the following months. This is actually the worst part of the day, but at least, I'm doing it first thing in the morning... The rest of the day is actually much more fun!!!
8:00 Break time. I forgot my coffee. I have to tell you something... They have in Haiku, a really good coffee shop called Colleen's, about 2 minutes from my place... But I prefer driving 15 minutes to Anthony's coffee in Paia. Why? Because the girls working there make you back to life in five minutes if you did not with your American breakfast. I tell you, they are so pretty...
9:00 Back home. It's time to work for another hour bugging people with my e-mails and several windsurfing projects...
10:00 Iwindsurf.com shows me that it's already windy at Ho'okipa. Sounds good, last night , the news on TV were forecasting 8 foot waves for Maui's north shore. Once again, we should get another perfect day in the paradise of windsurfing... Instantly, I get in my garage and grab the wave gear. 5.0 or 4.4 are the sails I use the most at Ho'okipa. The Acid 77 and the Acid 66 are the boards I use the most at Ho'okipa.
10:30 Full loud Trance Music on (CD made by MDMA), I'm driving my van on the way to Ho'okipa. The spot is only 5 minutes drive from where I stay in Haiku. Turning the last curve before Ho'okipa, I have a quick look on the ocean... Wow, this is going to be the typical perfect conditions!!! I have to stop watching the ocean, because last time, I almost crashed on somebody by not looking on the road. In front of Ho'okipa, a lot of car crashes are happening ...
10:35 I pass in front Pavilion, I have to keep myself calm and not driving fast because all the local surfers around the place get mad if you drive fast. Then finally, once again my parking spot is waiting for me. I park my
car and I look on the water and it seems 5.0. I watch a bit the surfers charging like pigs on logo high waves then I rig my sail.
11:00 It's time to go out! As usually, I'm the first out there! I don't know, it's seems that the more I windsurf, the more I get motivated to windsurf. I'm for sure the one who windsurfs the most on Maui, and I never get bored.
What's the problem with me?
11:05 Past the breakers, I find a really good logo wave! I know, I need to do good on this one because everyone is watching me from the beach. Upwind from the peak, I take off, bottom turn and too late for an aerial, I get pounded by the wave... Ah shoot!!! everyone was looking...
11:10 Wow, it's an other logo high wave! But this one got the best shape for many turns. I take off, bottom turn and yes!!!, mega aerial! I land on the shoulder and I do three other top turn finishes with a goiter. Yes!!! This
was the best time ever!!!
15:00 Break time. Full adrenalin on, I come back to the shore and I just think that once again, I forgot to eat a lunch... You need to know another thing: Kuau Mart has the best lunch in town... Chicken rice and gravy over it!!! Plus, the women working there, treats you like a mom. Also, they have cold Red Bull to make you keep going till sunset...
15:30 Back on the water for a late session. The wind still on, but it should go down soon. At 4:00, the wind usually drop a bit and switch from side shore to side off. For some guys like Rush Randle, these are the right
conditions for huge aerials!
17:30 Back on the beach. I got no more energy... The Red Bull doesn't work anymore! I go talk to my good friends about the session. The stories are like fisherman's stories, the fish is bigger than he was but we enjoy each other's stories.
18:00 I'm driving home hoping for another day like that tomorrow.
18:30 I eat my Top Ramens. This meal is actually the cheapest on Maui. You can eat like a pig for only $0.30. But I had peas and spaghetti sauce to it. So, it ends at $1.50 per meal.
19:30 I send e-mail to my friends telling them how good the windsurfing day was. They all get mad, because over there where I'm from, in Quebec, it's snowing and cold like you can't imagine.
20:00 Celebration time!!! I forgot, it's Wednesday night. That means that Casanova, the disco bar of the place, is going crazy tonight...
2:00 Back home... tired...
